In a 1,000 m race, Rohit can give Sameer a start of 100 m, and Sameer can give Tarun a start of 50 m in a 500 m race. By how many metres does Rohit beat Tarun in a 1,000 m race?

Rohit beats Tarun by 190 m. When Rohit runs 1,000 m, Sameer runs 900 m. Sameer's ratio to Tarun is 500 to 450, so Tarun covers 90 percent of 900, which is 810 m. The winning margin is 1,000 minus 810, equal to 190 m.

  1. ARohit beats Tarun by 190 mCorrect
  2. BRohit beats Tarun by 200 m
  3. CRohit beats Tarun by 150 m
  4. DRohit beats Tarun by 100 m

Explanation

Rohit : Sameer = 1000 : 900 in distance. Sameer : Tarun = 500 : 450 = 10 : 9, i.e. 900 : 810. So when Rohit runs 1,000 m, Tarun runs 900 x 0.9 = 810 m. Rohit beats Tarun by 1000 - 810 = 190 m; adding 100 + 100 gives the wrong 200 m.
