ACCA Strategic Professional · Strategic Business Leader · Leading and managing projects

Marlow Pharma has just finished a three-year plant automation project. The board asks for a review to be held after the project's outputs have been in operation for nine months, mainly to check whether the promised productivity gains have been achieved and to inform the approval of future projects. Which type of review is this?

This is a post-completion review. It takes place after the project outputs have been operating for a period, compares actual benefits such as productivity gains with those promised in the business case, and records lessons to improve future project selection and management. Closure or milestone reviews happen earlier and cannot assess realised benefits.

  1. AA post-completion review (post-implementation benefits review) focused on outcomes and lessons for future projectsCorrect
  2. BA project initiation review carried out to confirm the business case before funding is approved
  3. CA milestone review to decide whether the project should continue to the next stage
  4. DA post-project review held at closure to hand over deliverables and release the team

Explanation

A review carried out after the outputs have been operating, checking whether benefits were achieved and capturing lessons for future projects, is a post-completion review. A closure or handover review occurs at the end of the project and cannot measure benefits that only emerge later. Milestone and initiation reviews occur earlier in the lifecycle.
