A State law is challenged as violating Article 14. The State argues that it classifies persons into two groups with different treatment. Under the test of reasonable classification, the law will be upheld only if:

A law passes Article 14 scrutiny if the classification rests on an intelligible differentia and that differentia bears a rational nexus to the law's object. Equal protection does not demand identical treatment of everyone, so reasonable classification is permitted.

  1. AThe classification rests on an intelligible differentia that has a rational nexus with the object of the lawCorrect
  2. BThe classification is based on the wisdom of the legislature alone
  3. CThe law treats every person identically in all respects
  4. DThe classification is based on religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth

Explanation

Article 14 permits reasonable classification, which needs an intelligible differentia distinguishing the grouped persons from others and a rational relation to the law's object. Identical treatment of all is not required, as that would deny classification. Classification solely on the Article 15 grounds is prohibited.
