CA Foundation · Quantitative Aptitude · Seating Arrangements

Eight persons A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H sit around a circular table, all facing the centre. B sits third to the right of A. C sits opposite B. D is an immediate neighbour of C but not of A. E sits second to the left of D. F is an immediate neighbour of B but not of E. G sits between D and E. Who sits second to the left of H?

C sits second to the left of H. Fixing A at seat 1 and working clockwise gives B at 6, C at 2, D at 3, E at 5, F at 7, G at 4 and H at 8. Two seats clockwise from seat 8 is seat 2, which is C.

Explanation

Number the seats 1 to 8 clockwise, which is the direction of a person's left when facing the centre. Put A at 1. B is third to the right (anticlockwise), so B is at 6. C is opposite B, so C is at 2. D is a neighbour of C but not of A, so D is at 3. E is second to the left of D, so E is at 5. F neighbours B but not E, so F is at 7. G is between D and E, so G is at 4, leaving H at 8. Second to the left of H is seat 2, which is C. Counting to the right instead would wrongly give B.
