CA Foundation · Quantitative Aptitude · Seating Arrangements

Five persons are to be seated in a row of five chairs. In how many ways can this be done if two particular persons, Gopal and Hema, must occupy the two extreme end chairs?

The answer is 12. The two particular persons can take the two end chairs in 2 ways, and the other three persons can fill the middle three chairs in 3! = 6 ways, so the total is 2 x 6 = 12 arrangements.

  1. A6
  2. B12Correct
  3. C24
  4. D48

Explanation

Gopal and Hema can occupy the two ends in 2 ways (Gopal left or Gopal right). The remaining 3 persons fill the 3 middle chairs in 3! = 6 ways. Total = 2 x 6 = 12. The option 6 forgets that the two can swap ends.
