CA Foundation · Quantitative Aptitude · Seating Arrangements

In a seating puzzle with eight persons in a row, a student finds that a clue leads to two possible arrangements, and a later clue contradicts one of them. What should the student do?

The student should discard the arrangement that a later clue contradicts and continue with the surviving one. Every valid arrangement must satisfy all clues, so a case violating any clue is eliminated, and the consistent case gives the answer.

  1. ADiscard the contradicted arrangement and continue with the one that remains consistent with all cluesCorrect
  2. BKeep both arrangements and choose the one that looks neater
  3. CRestart with a different anchor person
  4. DAssume the later clue is misprinted

Explanation

A valid arrangement must satisfy every clue. When one case violates a clue, it is eliminated. The surviving case is the only one consistent with all the information, so work continues with it. Keeping an arrangement that violates a clue gives wrong answers.
