CA Foundation · Quantitative Aptitude · Seating Arrangements

Ravi is sitting in a single row of people, all facing north. He is 12th from the left end and 15th from the right end. How many people are there in the row?

The row has 26 people. Adding Ravi's position from the left and from the right counts Ravi twice, so the total is the sum of the two positions minus one: 12 plus 15 minus 1 equals 26. Choosing 27 forgets to remove the double count.

  1. A25
  2. B26Correct
  3. C27
  4. D28

Explanation

Ravi is counted in both his position from the left and his position from the right. So total = 12 + 15 - 1 = 26. The value 27 comes from simply adding the two positions and forgetting to remove the double count.
