CA Foundation · Quantitative Aptitude · Seating Arrangements

Six persons A, B, C, D, E and F sit in a row facing north. C sits at one of the extreme ends, and D sits immediately to the left of C. A sits third from the right end. Exactly one person sits between A and B. F does not sit at either end. How many persons sit between E and D?

Three persons sit between E and D. The arrangement from the left is E, B, F, A, D, C. E is in position 1 and D in position 5, so positions 2, 3 and 4 lie between them.

  1. A2
  2. B3Correct
  3. C4
  4. D5

Explanation

Number the positions 1 to 6 from the left. D sits immediately left of C, so C is at position 6 and D at position 5. A is third from the right, at position 4. Exactly one person lies between A and B, so B is at 2 (position 6 is taken). F is not at an end, so F is at 3 and E at 1. Between E (1) and D (5) are positions 2, 3 and 4, which is 3 persons. The answer 4 comes from counting one extra position.
