Two friends, Anil and Bhavna, start from the same point. Anil walks 5 km north, and Bhavna walks 5 km south. Anil then turns east and walks 12 km, while Bhavna turns east and walks 12 km. What is the distance between them now?

They are 10 km apart. Both end up the same distance east, so only the north-south gap matters: one is 5 km north of the starting line and the other 5 km south, giving 10 km.

  1. A10 kmCorrect
  2. B12 km
  3. C13 km
  4. D24 km

Explanation

Both walk 12 km east, so their east-west positions are the same. Their north-south separation is 5 + 5 = 10 km. They are therefore 10 km apart in a straight line. Distance 13 km would wrongly use Pythagoras on 5 and 12.

One question tells you little. A timed set on Direction Tests shows your real accuracy, how long you take and where you lose marks.
