CMA Final · Strategic Cost Management · Network Analysis - PERT, CPM

A network has these activities with durations in days and predecessors: A (3, none), B (4, A), C (6, A), D (5, B), E (2, C), F (3, D and E). What are the free floats of activities C and E respectively?

The free float of C is 0 and of E is 1. C's earliest finish at day 9 equals E's earliest start, leaving no free float. E finishes at day 11, but F cannot start before day 12 because D finishes then, so E has one day of free float.

  1. AC = 0, E = 1Correct
  2. BC = 1, E = 1
  3. CC = 1, E = 0
  4. DC = 0, E = 0

Explanation

Path A-B-D-F = 15 days is critical, and A-C-E-F = 14 days. C finishes at day 9 and E starts at day 9, so the free float of C = 9 - 9 = 0. E finishes at day 11 and F starts at day 12 (the later of D's finish at 12 and E's at 11), so the free float of E = 1. C has a total float of 1, but its free float is 0, so choosing 1 confuses total float with free float.
