In production control, what is the main purpose of the 'follow-up' or 'expediting' function?
Expediting or follow-up monitors the progress of production orders against the schedule and takes action to remove the causes of delay, such as material shortages or machine breakdowns, so that delivery commitments are met. It is a control activity, not a planning or measurement one.
- APreparing the bill of materials for new products
- BMonitoring progress of orders against schedules and removing causes of delayCorrect
- CDeciding the plant location for a new factory
- DDetermining the standard time for each operation
Explanation
Expediting compares actual progress with the schedule, identifies bottlenecks such as shortages or breakdowns, and takes action to bring orders back on track. Bills of materials belong to planning, location to facility decisions, and standard time to work measurement.
