In a micro-motion study of an assembly task filmed at 1,000 frames per minute, a cycle is recorded as 2,400 frames. A study of the same cycle after improvement shows 1,800 frames, of which 300 are the ineffective therblig 'Hold'. If the improved method eliminates all the Hold time from the improved cycle as well, what percentage reduction in cycle time is achieved relative to the original cycle?

The reduction is 37.5%. After the improvement the cycle is 1,800 frames, and eliminating 300 frames of Hold leaves 1,500. Compared with the original 2,400 frames, the saving is 900 frames, which is 37.5% of the original cycle time.

  1. A25.0%
  2. B37.5%Correct
  3. C12.5%
  4. D40.0%

Explanation

Removing Hold leaves 1,800 - 300 = 1,500 frames. Reduction = (2,400 - 1,500)/2,400 = 900/2,400 = 37.5%. The 25% option counts only the improvement before removing Hold, (2,400-1,800)/2,400. Check: 2,400 x 62.5% = 1,500.
