CMA Intermediate · Operations Management and Strategic Management · Scheduling and Queuing Models

In the standard M/M/1 queuing model, the first M, the second M and the 1 respectively describe:

M/M/1 means Poisson arrivals, exponential service times and a single server. M stands for Markovian, or memoryless, in both the arrival and service positions, and the final 1 gives the number of parallel servers, not a limit on customers in the system.

  1. APoisson arrivals, exponential service times, one serverCorrect
  2. BExponential arrivals, Poisson service, one queue
  3. CPoisson arrivals, exponential service times, one customer in the system at a time
  4. DConstant arrivals, exponential service times, one server

Explanation

Kendall notation lists arrival process, service process and number of servers. M means Markovian: Poisson arrivals (exponential inter-arrival times) and exponential service times. The 1 is the number of servers, not a limit on customers.
