A company with 3 departments wants every pair of departments to have a direct standing joint committee for collaboration. Each committee involves exactly two departments. Later it expands to 6 departments and keeps the same rule. By how many does the number of committees increase?

The number of committees rises by 12. With pairwise committees the count is n(n-1)/2, which is 3 for three departments and 15 for six departments. The increase is 15 minus 3, so 12. This also shows how coordination links grow quickly as units are added.

  1. A3
  2. B6
  3. C12Correct
  4. D15

Explanation

Committees equal the number of pairs, n(n-1)/2. For 3 departments: 3. For 6 departments: 15. Increase = 15 - 3 = 12. Option 15 gives only the new total, and 6 wrongly assumes a linear increase with departments.
